Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club Welcomes New Members

The Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club is an active friendly club that promotes amateur sailing and racing in both dinghy and cruiser classes. The club also prides its self on keen family involvement and encourages fun family sailing and social events. The clubs shore based headquarters are located in the old station building

in Old Leigh, adjacent to the beach.
Dinghy launching facilities are available at the waters edge and cruiser moorings are available along the foreshore and at Two Tree Island.

Cruiser Class

Leigh Cruisers are made up of a variety of small to medium shoal draft vessels suited to local sailing grounds and drying moorings. That said, a small number of deeper draft boats are moored off Two-Tree Island. Club boats range from pocket cruisers through to Club Classics including gaff cutters “Lady Beatrice”, the barge yacht “Nancy Grey” and more modern designs from Feeling, Mirage, Parker and Westerly.  Racing is available through the Combined Clubs Cruiser Series. In conjunction with the Benfleet Yacht Club, Essex Yacht Club and Island Yacht Club a series of local port to port races are held throughout the season. These include races to the local rivers the Medway, Swale and Blackwater. Leigh Cruises also enjoy cruising in company as well as having an active class social programme that includes an annual barbecue at Stangate Creek.

Training

The club offers practical as well shore-based training current courses including Dinghy 1&2, Dinghy Race Training, and Power Craft 1&2.  These courses are primarily run by Perfect Day Watersports with whom the club has an association.

Dinghy Sailing

Dinghy racing at Leigh-on-Sea is well supported with Fast, Medium and Slow handicap classes, RS400’s and RS200’s competing in fast and medium handicap fleets respectively. These fleets also include ISO’s RS600’s, and Catamarans as well as GP14’s, Lasers and Topper Topaz classes. The slow handicap class is made up mainly of Toppers, Mirror and Tideway Dinghies. Racing is run in conjunction with the Essex Yacht Club and the program includes combined starts from the LSC and EYC start lines. Races are held on the tide around set courses and are normally around one and a half hours long. Trophy races are also a feature of the sailing season as are combined inter club races.
It’s not all racing though. Local creeks and marshland features make Leigh-on-Sea the perfect place to potter. Home of the Tideway dinghy a 12’open boat that was designed and was traditionally built by Mr L.H Walker is idea for this type of leisure sailing.

Club Social

The club entertainments team runs a number of social events throughout the year these are mainly family events that include fancy dress parties, barbeques our annual dinner dance and various suppers. The club bar is open on Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes throughout the year.
